Program Information

Basic Unreal Engine 5

Basic Unreal Engine 5 course banner Todak Academy Cyberjaya game development program

About the Course

This program focuses on the skills and techniques required for interactive game design as well as high-quality real-time 3D animation using Unreal Engine without requiring in-depth knowledge of programming. Throughout the program, participants will learn to build game mechanics with Blueprint, create dynamic animations using Sequencer, and integrate Lumen and Nanite for comprehensive visuals. The curriculum is designed for game designers and animators aspiring to specialize in developing complete prototypes with compelling narrative visual elements.

Modules

- Review prerequisites and create a Film/Video-optimized project
- Overview of key animation asset types: Animation Sequences, Control Rig, IK Retargeter
- Import rigged characters (.fbx) or use mannequin / MetaHuman starters
- Control Rig fundamentals: FK/IK solvers, basic full-body rigging and posing
- Create and save static poses + simple looping idle animation
- Hands-on: Build 2–3 expressive poses and a basic idle cycle

- Create and organize Level Sequences (tracks, sections, sub-sequences)
- Add and bind actors + introduce Cine Camera Actor
- Keyframing essentials: transform properties, visibility, curve editor (tangents, ease in/out)
- Shot structure basics: Camera Cuts track, ripple edits, multi-shot blocking
- Hands-on: Block a simple 3–5 shot narrative sequence with character movement

- Use Animation tracks: play sequences, layering, additive modifications
- Keyframe facial expressions / lip-sync basics (MetaHuman or morph targets)
- Animate rigid props and interactions (doors, objects, pickups)
- Timing refinement: stretch/compress time, slow-motion, cut transitions
- Hands-on: Animate a character performing 3 linked actions + 2–3 interactive props

- Deep dive into Cine Camera: focal length, aperture, depth of field, focus modes
- Create dynamic moves: dolly, zoom, pan, orbit, crane-style simulation
- Camera attachment/follow techniques (spring arm or direct binding)
- Apply basic polish: motion blur, chromatic aberration, keyframe curve smoothing
- Hands-on: Enhance the Day 1 sequence with 5–7 cinematic camera moves
- End-of-day group review + optional homework (refine curves/timing)

- Compare Lumen real-time GI vs hybrid/baked lighting for cinematic shots
- Build classic setups: 3-point lighting + practical sources (windows, lamps, rim lights)
- Add atmospheric elements: Exponential Height Fog, volumetric clouds, god rays
- Quick Niagara intro for subtle effects (smoke, embers, dust motes)
- Hands-on: Relight the animated sequence for a strong cinematic mood (e.g., golden hour or dramatic night)

- Use Post Process Volume (global overrides vs per-shot/local)
- Color grading tools: temperature/tint, contrast, saturation, LUT application
- Lens & filmic effects: bloom, lens flares, film grain, vignetting, distortion
- Animate post effects non-destructively in Sequencer
- Hands-on: Develop and apply a cohesive filmic look across the full sequence

- Enable and configure Movie Render Queue (MRQ) plugin
- Create render jobs and use/save presets (2025/2026 best practices)
- Key render settings:
- Output formats (EXR multilayer, PNG sequence, ProRes)
- Anti-aliasing (temporal/spatial samples, TSR)
- Warm-up frames, deferred rendering, ray-tracing denoising
- Important console variables (r.TemporalAA, r.Lumen, motion blur controls)
- Basic color management (ACES workflow intro)

- Complete polish pass: final timing adjustments, basic sound cue integration
- Stability checks: fix popping, flickering, geometry issues
- Launch full high-quality render of the 15–40 second sequence
- Playback session + group critique (share and discuss clips)
- Brief export workflow: image sequences → external editors (DaVinci Resolve / Premiere) for final comp/grading
- Q&A, certificates, and next-steps discussion"
