Canva for Design

This module is designed to equip students with essential and practical skills in producing effective, engaging, and inclusive digital communication designs using Canva, in line with the needs of collaboration, multi-channel communication, and the development of a professional portfolio.

About the Course

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to confidently navigate and utilize Canva’s interface to create effective communication designs by applying core design principles such as composition, branding, and accessibility, develop a wide range of communication assets including social media graphics, presentations, newsletters, and flyers using available tools, collaborate effectively with others to optimize designs for different formats and purposes, and compile as well as present a professional portfolio that showcases a diverse collection of completed design projects.

- Explore UI and Sign-In: Access Canva’s homepage, create an account, and log in

- Navigate Dashboard: Identify and explore key sections (e.g., Templates, Elements)

- Customize Workspace: Adjust settings to enhance workflow

- Experiment with Basic Tools: Use text tools, shapes, and elements to create a simple design

- Study Composition Rules: Analyze and apply the rule of thirds and balance

- Select Visuals: Choose appropriate visuals for a specific audience

- Create Basic Branding: Develop a color palette and logo using available elements

- Ensure Accessibility: Adjust a design for high contrast and add alt text

- Develop Mock Design: Create a mock poster showcasing aesthetic principles

- Design Social Media Graphics: Create a post and story layout for a campaign

- Develop Presentation Slides: Build a 3-slide presentation

- Craft Newsletter and Flyer: Design an email newsletter and flyer

- Integrate Assets: Combine photos and icons into a cohesive layout

- Set Up Collaboration: Share a design link with a team and gather feedback

- Create Custom Design: Develop a unique design using available elements

- Optimize Exports: Prepare designs for different supported formats

- Compile Portfolio: Assemble and present a portfolio with three finished designs
